WSB-TV, Georgia Giant Documentary Files, Series VI. Audiovisual Materials consists of 139 16mm films that were created in the production of Richard Russell: A Georgia Giant, in 1970. The reels include negative, internegative, magnetic sound, optical sound, answer print, and composite print reels. Additionally, one 2-inch videotape contains an introduction to the documentary by Herman Talmadge, aired on WSB-TV when the documentary was shown. Five Umatic videotapes and 11 VHS videotapes, containing copies of the final production, were made by the Russell Library in the 1980s and 1990s, and integrated into the collection in 2011. The full-length Georgia Giant runs two hours and 48 minutes, while the shorter classroom version is 34 minutes long. User copies are available only for the finished productions.

Richard B. Russell, Jr. Oral History Project includes The collection consists of 175 oral history interviews relating to the personal and political life of Richard B. Russell. Interviewees include members of the Russell family, his staff and interns, other senators and public figures, and friends. The primary interviewer was Hugh Cates, a public relations manager at Southern Bell and secretary of the Russell Foundation (1977-1981). Most of the interviews were recorded between 1971 and 1979, but the majority during 1971 after Senator Russell's death. Other interviewers outside of the Russell Foundation Oral History Project include: William Stueck, Karen Kelly, Barboura Raesly, Robert G. Stephens, Jr., Dwight L. Freshley, Tom Jackson, Angus Hepburn, and Russell Library staff. Interviews provide insight into Senator Russell's political career as State Representative, Governor, and U.S. Senator, his views on various topics such as civil rights and Vietnam, and his personality and family life. The Richard B. Russell, Jr. Collection, Subgroup C, Series X: Civil Rights relates to many aspects of the civil rights issue. Almost all of the files deal with black-white relations in the United States, particularly those involving legislative action during Senator Russell's career in the Senate. Issues, such as the antilynching bill, the Fair Employment Practices Committee, racial integration, and the various civil rights bills from 1948 until 1964, are documented. There are also records related to other topics such as cloture, the literacy voting bill, the poll tax, school prayer, and some subjects which are indirectly related to the race issue. Any additional non-textual materials originally filed with papers were removed for preservation purposes and improved access. It is subdivided into general correspondence and subject files. General correspondence contains writings and materials of a general international nature. The Subject files include correspondence and materials pertaining to specific geographic regions, such as Africa and the Middle East, and countries such as Cuba, Angola, the Dominican Republic and Vietnam. Materials relating to the British Loan (1942-1946), the Berlin Crisis, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Pueblo Incident, and the Dominican Republic Crisis of 1965 are located in these files. The collection consists of the diary and personal and political papers of Richard B. Russell, Sr. from 1872 to 1938. The personal papers include correspondence relating to Russell"s involvement on the Board of Trustees at the University of Georgia and as a member of the first Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, family related correspondence, and a few speeches made by Russell. The political series (1888-1938) contains mostly correspondence pertaining to various campaigns for public and judicial offices, including his 1911 gubernatorial bid. The business/finance records include bank statements, bills and receipts, and miscellaneous items. The legal/judicial series contains material relating to Russell"s law practice in Winder, Georgia and his many years as a noted jurist.

Hal Henderson is a retired professor of political science from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) in Tifton, Ga. His main research field is mid-twentieth century Georgia politics. The oral history interviews in this collection are the result of research Henderson conducted for two books, one on Ellis Arnall and the other on Ernest Vandiver. This collection also contains eight VHS recordings from a symposium on Georgia governors directed by Hal Henderson and Gary Roberts that was held at ABAC in 1985.

John Harold Hawkins was born May 22, 1892, in Forsyth County, Georgia, the son of Perry C. Hawkins and Della Bramblett Hawkins. He was admitted to the Bar in 1916 and served as official court reporter of the Blue Ridge Circuit. Hawkins was nominated Associate Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court in the Democratic primary held September 8, 1948. The papers of Judge Hawkins include correspondence and printed materials related to his 1948 campaign, a small number of administrative and case files maintained by legal assistant Harold Glore, personal correspondence, clippings and photographs.

Hugh Peterson (1898-1961), of Ailey, Georgia, served as a representative to the Georgia legislature from 1923 to 1931, a state senator from 1931 to 1932, and a United States Representative from Georgia's First Congressional District from 1934 to 1946. His wife, Patience Elizabeth Russell Peterson (1902-2002), was the daughter of Judge Richard B. Russell, Sr. and sister of Senator Richard B. Russell, Jr. Peterson was heavily involved in creating the Georgia State Government Reorganization Bill of 1931 and, as a U.S. Representative, was active in sponsoring farm legislation. His congressional work included service on the Transportation, Territories, Rivers and Harbors, Public Lands, and Elections committees. After losing the 1946 election to Prince Preston of Statesboro, Peterson worked with General Lucius Clay in Germany in 1947 as a consultant. After his return, he devoted his time to practicing law in Ailey and serving as a lobbyist in Washington, D. C., for various businesses with interests in Georgia. The collection includes political, business and personal papers as well as campaign memorabilia, photographs, artifacts, maps, and books, all generated and collected by Hugh Peterson, Sr. The collection documents Hugh Peterson, Sr., Patience Russell Peterson (wife), Hugh Peterson, Jr. (son), their extended family (the Petersons and the Russells), and persons active in Georgia politics as well as members of Congress, other politicians and various business people active in Washington, D.C. during the 1920s through the 1960s.

The Richard B. Russell, Jr. Collection comprehensively documents Russell's activities as a United States senator representing the state of Georgia. The Dictation Series is composed of letters and memoranda entirely or partially dictated by Senator Russell. The series is an integration of the copies for the Winder and Washington offices. Most of the dictated correspondence or memos contain Russell's views on upcoming legislation, political appointments, support of or opposition to bills and amendments as well as his positions on such issues as defense, the Vietnam war, agriculture issues, the investigation of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and civil rights and other national issues. Senator Russell rarely expressed his opinions regarding local and state politics in writing or in any public forum.

The Richard B. Russell, Jr. Collection, Subgroup C, Series IX. Legislative is primarily constituent mail, but includes legislative drafts, memoranda, hearing transcripts, and correspondence with congressional colleagues. Although official senate committee records remain with each committee and, when retired by the committee, they are transferred to the Center for Legislative Archives, National Archives and Records Administration, in Washington, D.C., as part of the permanent records of Congress, Senator Russell retained copies of some materials related to these committees. Subgroup C, Series V. Personal contains correspondence and material of a personal nature including invitations, greetings, announcements, commendations, gifts, family material, etc. With the exception of some correspondence with his mother, all family correspondence was removed to Exhibit B and restricted by donor agreement. Especially noteworthy are the materials related to History, Miscellaneous, and Trips. While History generally has materials relating to Russell's interest in the subject, specifically the Civil War, Russell occasionally designated certain items to be placed here. For example, at his direction, research and strategy files from the 1960 civil rights debates are located here. Miscellaneous has a significant amount of correspondence from personal friends. Trips contains correspondence and material on all of Senator Russell's trips including those made in his capacity as a member or chairman of a senate committee. For example, correspondence and material from Russell's 1943 global tour of the war front as chairman of a special senate committee to investigate overseas military bases demonstrate the senator's work on such assignments. During many of these overseas trips prior to 1950, Russell had very revealing correspondence with his mother, which is included. Trips are filed under year in which they were made. If more than one trip was made within a year, the trips were filed alphabetically by country within the year.
